1 Samuel 17:37-And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go and the Lord be with you.”

The story of David and Goliath never gets old. A few weeks ago in church our pastor was going through a sermon series in 1 Samuel and it was time for the super heroic story of the young peasant boy named David. This is a great children’s Bible story because it has the plot line of an average peasant defeating a giant in a big way. The story is exciting and shows God is bigger than even a huge Philistine. It is a great feel good story where the underdog comes out on top.  I think when I was younger my thoughts about the story stopped there. As I sat in church listening to this story recently, I was captivated by the action and I was paying attention to every little detail leading up to David killing Goliath. I was thinking this story is not just a great story for children this is a wonderful reminder to all of us that God is bigger than all of our problems or worries. We can learn a lot from this story of David defeating Goliath.

First off, David’s focus was on God and not on the struggle at hand. How freeing would it be each day if we would just keep our focus on God and not worry about our problems that seem so big? Secondly, David had huge faith. He was confident God was on his side. David says to Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:45, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.”

As David approached the battle with his sling and just five rocks he did not let fear slow him down. This is such an important lesson for us. So often we let fear keep us right where we are. Our fears and insecurities keep us from taking big leaps of faith for God’s glory. Fear is from the enemy and we must recognize that and not let it stop us in our tracks. The Bible tells us in 1 Samuel 17:48, “When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle to meet the Philistine.” What? Can you believe that? He ran quickly? How can that be? Here he was a small young lad running to meet a large person over 9 feet tall with only a sling and stones.

There is definitely a lot we can learn from David. I encourage you to pick up your Bible this week and read the story of David and Goliath. 1 Samuel 17 is action-packed and filled with so many powerful reminders in our walk with the Lord. When you find yourself in a situation and gripped with fear remember David and his no-fear attitude and his huge faith in God! Let David be an inspiration to you as you let go of the fear and face your giant.

Prayer for the week: Dear Lord, Thank you for allowing us to explore the Bible story of David and Goliath. Open our eyes so that we see this is not just a story for children. There are many truths packed in this one story that we can use in our life daily. Please be with us this week as we work to overcome our fears so we can honor you in all we do. Help us to see your glory in even the most difficult of situations. In your precious name we pray. Amen.
